If you are concerned about altitude sickness, here are some ways to prevent it: First, keep in mind that because we are not that high, nor is the mountain park we are visiting, therefore, symptoms, if any, should be easy to work with. The American Heart Assn's web site explains more and talks of elevations over 8000 feet, more than you will be at during your stay, unless you go camping with us or take other drives through the mountains.
If you have health concerns: Talk to your doctor for more info and any interactions with medication you may be taking. Denver is at 5280 ft elevation (hence mile high) and the park we will be in Sat. is approx. 7000 ft - not much difference
a natural preventative remedy is ginko, check with your natural food store for doses, etc.
take aspirin about 1 week prior to coming to thin your blood
drink LOTS of water, all throughout the day, more than normal, it really helps
DON'T drink lots of alcohol until you see how the altitude affects you, figure 1 drink = 3 until you are used to it, and many won't be here long enough to really get used to it
eat some dark chocolate, something in it is supposed to help
get plenty of rest, you may be a bit more tired, at first
take it easy and listen to your body! your regular workout or typical activity may not work for you! yes, sulgits - RELAX!
Symptoms can include slight dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath (with exertion). Mostly when people talk of altitude sickness it's mountain climbers that go much higher without any rest in between. What we are doing shouldn't impact most. My mother, sister, brother, Ashley and friends, all of different ages and health have not had any problems during visits, even driving or being in the mountains.
The area we are going to Sat. is wheelchair accessible and has some large steps down to the shelter where we will be—not a lot of walking at all. Bathrooms are up the wheelchair ramp, or stairs; again, not very far. Walking and hiking is certainly available in the area, but not at all necessary for where we will be, purely optional! You can sit and enjoy the views all day! Also, if anyone is getting tired, there's a few restaurants in the area, and then Denver is only about 45 minutes away. Don't worry, we've thought of this stuff, too!
